Airport Airside Engineer
The Airport Airside Engineer supports the strategic development and delivery of airside infrastructure planning initiatives at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The role contributes to the safe, efficient, and scalable expansion of airside capacity in line with forecast traffic growth and long-term airport development objectives.
As part of the airport’s Planning and Development function, the position supports the design, assessment, and optimization of runways, taxiways, aprons, and associated airside systems. The role combines engineering expertise with planning methodologies to ensure compliance with international standards, operational requirements, and sustainability objectives appropriate to a growing European hub airport.
These will be your tasks:
- Support the development of airside capacity expansion plans, including runways, taxiways, aprons, de-icing facilities, and remote stands
- Contribute to airfield layout planning and geometric design in accordance with operational, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Perform airside capacity assessments, including runway throughput, taxiway performance, and stand/gate utilization
- Coordinate and support airfield simulation studies (e.g., aircraft movement modeling) to identify constraints and validate proposed solutions
- Assist in the development and review of airside infrastructure concepts, ensuring alignment with master planning objectives
- Ensure, in cooperation with the Airport Compliance team, that all airside planning and design activities comply with applicable safety, operational, and regulatory standards
- Participate in design reviews to verify compliance with functional, operational, and safety requirements
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (planners, engineers, architects) to integrate airside requirements into overall airport development projects
- Support the development of phasing and staging strategies to enable capacity expansion while minimizing operational disruption
- Monitor industry best practices, innovations, and emerging technologies in airfield design and operations
- Provide technical input to the preparation and update of the airport master plan, with a focus on airside systems
- Translate traffic forecasts into airside infrastructure requirements and development scenarios
- Support long-term capacity development programs by identifying scalable and flexible airfield solutions
- Assist in safeguarding airside development areas and ensuring compatibility with future expansion phases
- Contribute engineering insight to strategic planning decisions, ensuring feasibility, efficiency, and compliance
- Coordinate with planning teams to ensure alignment between airside and landside development strategies
- The position may involve participation in technical workshops, coordination meetings, and occasional travel for project coordination, training, or industry benchmarks.
What we expect from you:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Airfield Engineering, Aviation Engineering, or a related discipline
- 1–3 years of relevant experience in airfield design, airport planning, or aviation infrastructure projects
- Exposure to airport airside projects, including layout development and/or capacity analysis
- Good understanding of international airfield design standards and regulatory frameworks
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with external consultants
- Experience with CAD and/or GIS software for airfield layout development
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach
- Project coordination skills and ability to manage inputs from multiple stakeholders
- Ability to interpret technical standards and apply them in practical design contexts
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (additional European languages are an advantage)
- Familiarity with airside simulation and modeling tools (e.g., AirTOP, SIMMOD, TAAM, or similar) is a plus
